Agile Practices in Management

What we today know as “agile practices” have been developed in the software industry. While today the software industry dominates all other industries, it has gone through many crisis before effective ways of organizing highly specialized knowledge workers have been be found . (Software development can be seen as the essence of what Peter Drucker once labeled knowledge work.)

One of the basic discoveries has been that innovative solutions emerge more often as a result of a collaboration between self-organizing, cross-functional teams and units.

Thus, practices as adaptive planning, evolutionary development, short feedback-cycles, “test-and-learn” instead of “plan-and-implement”, continuous improvement, and rapid and flexible responses to change have become key elements of any successful practice.

Meanwhile agile practices have become part modern management approaches.

Agile Manifesto

The term “agile” in the context of software development has first been introduced in 2001 with the Manifesto for Agile Software Development, also known as the Agile Manifesto:
